WSE Aims to Save Fuel the "SmartWay"

Image
WSE Transportation, LLC, a subsidiary of Willis Shaw Express, is pleased to announce that on December 1, 2005 the Company joined the SmartWay Transport Partnership, a voluntary program that aims to help trucking companies and their customers protect their bottom line and the environment. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) worked with the American Trucking Association and others from the freight industry to develop this market-based partnership. The Partnership offers real value to any company whose business involves ground freight- from “mom and pop” truck fleets, to larger carriers, to owner-operators.

The idea behind the SmartWay Transport Partnership is simple: improving efficiency saves fuel and money, reduces emission of carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) and improves air quality. Trucking companies that join the partnership commit to improve the fuel efficiency of their fleets. Improving fuel efficiency helps trucking companies save money. Reducing fuel consumption contributes to a healthier environment and promotes energy security by reducing oil imports. These actions contribute to a strong economy and help sustain our nation’s vital trucking industry.

As with most truckload carriers, fuel is now the second highest cost on WSE’s income statement. Improving fuel economy by managing truck idle time, route optimization and equipment gearing and aerodynamics are all paths carriers have traveled. With fuel price spikes and volatility likely to remain a fact-of-life, it’s critical that the industry and government work together to share and promote best practices and new technologies.

“The fuel inefficiencies for a truck load carrier are astounding. The waste and pollution generated by an idling truck is a travesty. I am very excited about industry and government cooperating to accomplish something that makes total sense in every aspect.” – Chris Kozak, President.
